ONAM, A CELEBRATION OF HUMANITY AND EQUALITY

Indian School Sohar celebrated the grand festival of Onam with great enthusiasm and fervor on Wednesday, 30th of August 2023. The event took place in the school's Recreation Hall, where a special assembly was organized by classes VI–IX students to mark this auspicious occasion.

The celebration began with a captivating welcome song that set the tone for the vibrant celebration. The highlight of the event was the entry of Maveli, a symbolic figure associated with Onam, who delivered a heartfelt message to the audience about the significance of the festival and its cultural importance.

A captivating presentation followed, which depicted various facets of Onam. A beautifully crafted pookkalam, the intricate floral design, adorned the stage, representing the traditional artistry associated with the festival. The presentation also included mesmerizing folk dances that captured the essence of Kerala's rich cultural heritage. The audience was transported to the banks of the tranquil backwaters with a depiction of Vallam Kali, the traditional boat race, and the exhilarating Tiger Race, both integral parts of Onam festivities. The visual journey through these elements offered a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Kerala. They showcased the elegance of Onakkodi, the traditional attire worn during Onam, through a delightful display. The graceful Thiruvathirakkali dance and the soulful Onam song further enriched the cultural extravaganza.

The Principal addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of preserving and cherishing one's cultural roots. The Principal's message resonated with the students, encouraging them to embrace their heritage while excelling in their academic pursuits. The Principal also took the opportunity to commend both the staff and students for their dedication in making the event a remarkable success.

The event culminated in the prize distribution ceremony, where winners of various competitions were honoured. The vibrant atmosphere of the celebration reached its crescendo with the rendition of the national anthem, uniting all present in a patriotic spirit.

A special assembly was conducted for the students of KG to II that showcased a harmonious blend of tradition and culture of Kerala. A student dressed up as King Mahabali graced the assembly with his presence. Students shared the history, cultural importance, and underlying message of unity and harmony associated with this festival. The audience was further immersed in the festive spirit by the soulful song and captivating dance performed by the talented children of classes I and II.

The Onam celebration at Indian School Sohar was not just a festival, but a beautiful amalgamation of tradition, culture, and unity. The event was a testament to the school's commitment to nurturing cultural values among its students, fostering a sense of pride in their heritage, and promoting harmony and togetherness among the school community.
