05-02-2024

Indian School Sohar commemorated the Janma Jayanti of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati on 11th December 2023, marking a culmination of the 11 week long Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav.

Beginning on 26th October 2023, a wide variety of activities were organized in the school Which had its culmination on 11th December 2023. Learning to read and write the alphabet of different languages was the stepping stone for all other activities that followed. Students were given exposure to different languages through PowerPoint presentations. They were given ample opportunities to participate and practice their linguistic skills through games, map work, school trivia, thoughtful discussions, greeting card making, numeracy related activities, poster making, story-telling and singing. Special activities like Reader’s Theatre, Cleanliness Drive, Ethnic India, Joy of Reading and many more were organized to give a broader platform to the students to showcase their linguistic skills and to develop confidence in presentation. Staff and parents also wrote out thoughts in different languages on the theme of Unity in Diversity. The various activity outputs were displayed on the soft boards.

The grand finale on 11th December began with teachers putting their signatures in their mother tongue on a common white board at the reception. A special class assembly was conducted as a dedication to the great ‘Mahakavi Bharati’ on the occasion. The students were inspired by his thoughts. A PowerPoint Presentation was shown to the students about his life and works and a rendition of some of his works was also presented to enable the students to enjoy and appreciate this versatile genius. Students dressed up as Mahakavi Subramania Bharati and recited his poems in Tamil as well as in translation, with actions and expressions to match. The various activities were coordinated by Ms. Navjot Kaur Saini and Ms. Michelle R.

ISS reflects the rich linguistic diversity of India with a multilingual teacher and student fraternity. Language is not merely a means of communication; it is a reflection of our culture, history, and identity. The whole hearted participation of the students in the celebrations, with support from parents and guidance from teachers, reaffirmed the belief that this treasure trove of languages is being rightfully cherished and will be preserved in all its glory. The event concluded with the resolve to embrace and celebrate the richness of our Bharatiya Bhasha every day!
