SEMINAR ON EFFECTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT IN SCHOOLS

A seminar on “effective waste management in schools” was held on April 14th,2015 at the Environmental research Centre, Sohar University from 9 am to 1 pm.

A team of Green Gyan, Eco Club volunteers along with the teacher co-ordinator Mrs. Asha Mohan attended the brain storming seminar with full enthusiasm who were motivated by principal Ms. Sanchita Verma. Other participants were from Al Batinah International School, Indian School Muladha, Saham Girls School & International School Sohar.

Mr. Garry Winn ,Vice-chancellor, Sohar  University delivered the welcome speech assuring involvement of schools in the Al Batinah region in promoting environmental awareness & preservation followed by a short speech by Dr. Amin Nahwada, researcher at the Environmental research Centre, Sohar University describing solid waste management in the schools of Japan.

Ms. Noora Nasser, a final year civil engineering student focussed on the importance of waste management in Oman followed by an activity involving children to test their understanding on the concepts of reduce, reuse, recycle, incineration & compost.

Ms.Rashmi Gopal, researcher & co-ordinator of the event imparted knowledge about environmental & health impacts of improper management of wastes highlighting on leaching, bio-magnification, ozone layer depletion etc. She also enlightened the students about waste paper management & involved the children in expressing their views & opinions.

“Plastic waste management has assumed great significance in view of the urbanisation activities for which various strategies are being devised to mitigate the impact of plastic waste & the future generation has a great task to implement” said Ms. Maryam  Al Qasmi, lab supervisor, Ministry Of Education.

There was also a presentation by Saham Girls School followed by a short speech byMr. Rahul Khatav, student co-ordinator of Green Gyan sharing the eco-friendly activities conducted in the school. The questions put forth by our volunteers & their replies to the relevant questions was highly appreciated by Ms. Rashmi Gopal.

Finally each school presented their future vision on how they would manage wastes better in their school. Our Green Gyan volunteers would disseminate this knowledge amongst other classes in the school.
