05-05-2026

The Inter-House English Debate Competition 2026–2027, held at Indian School Sohar on 27th April 2026, stood as a testament to the power of articulate expression, critical inquiry, and intellectual engagement among students. The event unfolded as a vibrant celebration of reasoned argument and persuasive eloquence, offering participants a distinguished platform to deliberate on the motion, “AI in Education Improves Learning More than it Harms Creativity.”

The topic, both contemporary and compelling, ignited a stimulating exchange of ideas, encouraging participants to probe deeply into the evolving relationship between human cognition and technological advancement. As aptly stated by Stephen Hawking, “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change,” a sentiment that resonated throughout the debate.

Representing the four houses—Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow—the students exhibited exceptional enthusiasm and rhetorical finesse. Their arguments were marked by clarity, coherence, and depth of research. The adjudicating panel evaluated participants on content, delivery, rebuttal, and overall impact.

The proceedings commenced with an insightful address by the Head of the Department of English, Mrs. Divya Johari, who introduced the judges and underscored the significance of debates as a dynamic pedagogical tool. She remarked that such platforms nurture not only communication skills but also the ability to think critically and engage meaningfully with global issues.

As the debate progressed, the atmosphere grew increasingly charged with intellectual fervor. Participants engaged in a spirited exchange of perspectives, presenting arguments supported by credible evidence and articulate expression. Their confident demeanor and strategic rebuttals transformed the event into a scintillating “war of wits.”

The culmination of the competition witnessed Yellow House, represented by Joveena Susan Joby and Tanmaya Kumavat, securing the first position with their compelling arguments and teamwork. Blue House (Agnes Lisa Emmanuel and Driti Basu) earned the second position, followed by Green House (Mangal Prabhu and Advika Ray) and Red House (Tejas Surepally and Kennith Akbari) in third and fourth places respectively.

Individual accolades further highlighted outstanding performances. Advika Ray was declared the First Runner-Up, while Joveena Susan Joby secured the position of Second Runner-Up. Agnes Lisa Emmanuel was honoured as the Best Speaker and received recognition for the Best Rebuttal.

The adjudicators lauded the participants for their intellectual rigour, sportsmanship, and mutual respect, appreciating their dedication despite limited preparation time.

In her concluding address, the Principal, Mrs. Sanchita Verma, extended her heartfelt congratulations to all participants. She commended their confidence, clarity of thought, and persuasive articulation, emphasizing with anecdotes that debates play a crucial role in shaping informed, confident, and responsible individuals. Echoing this idea, Malcolm X once said, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

In retrospect, the event not only celebrated the art of debate but also reaffirmed the school’s commitment to nurturing thoughtful and articulate young minds, fostering critical thinking and refined communication.
