CELEBRATION OF THE HISTORIC VOYAGE OF INSV KAUNDINYA

A special programme was organised to commemorate the successful and historic voyage of INSV Kaundinya – the Stitched Ship of India, celebrating the enduring maritime and cultural ties between India and Oman.

The programme commenced with a warm welcome to the distinguished crew members of INSV Kaundinya—Lieutenant Commander Srihari L, Rahul Rai MCPO II RP, Hemachalam Kanithi MCPO II GS, Kushal Sinwar LS, and Harjit Singh LCOM, Officials from the Indian Embassy, along with the Gujarati Folk Dance Group from India, were also cordially welcomed.

The gathering was further honoured by the presence of the President of the School Managing Committee, Mr. Abraham George; esteemed member of the SMC—Mr. Ajay Damani; the Management of the Hindu Temple & the Honourable Treasurer and Chairperson of the Finance Subcommittee, ISWK, Mr. Rajesh G. Soneji; other invited dignitaries; staff members; parents; and students.

As a mark of respect, the programme began with the Royal Anthem of Oman and the National Anthem of India. Heartfelt gratitude was expressed to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq for his visionary leadership and for fostering the growth and development of education for Indian children in the Sultanate of Oman.

The event was organised by the Gujarati Community under the auspices of the Indian Embassy in the Sultanate of Oman, celebrating the successful voyage of INSV Kaundinya from Porbandar to Muscat, symbolically reviving ancient maritime links between the two nations.

A floral welcome was extended to the distinguished crew members and the Indian folk artists. The bouquets, thoughtfully prepared by staff and students, were made using scented candle flowers, adding a unique and meaningful touch to the ceremony.

A brief presentation highlighted the remarkable story of INSV Kaundinya. Inspired by a 5th-century CE ship depicted in the Ajanta cave murals, the vessel was constructed using a 2,000-year-old traditional stitched-ship technique, employing coir rope, coconut fibre, and natural resin. The ship was formally inducted into the Indian Navy on 21st May 2025 and flagged off from Porbandar on 29th December 2025, covering approximately 1,400 kilometres (750 nautical miles) over 17 days with an 18-member crew. The voyage was recognised in the Joint Statement issued during the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India’s visit to Oman, highlighting shared maritime heritage, symbolised by the letter ‘M’ for Maritime Heritage in the acronym MAITRI.

A video presentation showcased the craftsmanship, courage, and dedication behind this extraordinary voyage, followed by a heartfelt appreciation and applause for the crew members.

The keynote address was delivered by Lieutenant Commander Srihari L, who shared valuable insights and inspiring reflections on the voyage and India’s rich maritime legacy. His address was received with great appreciation.

The programme was enriched by a vibrant cultural performance by the Gujarati folk dance troupe led by Shri Rajendrakumar D. Rawal, presenting traditional dance forms such as Kerbano Vesh, Hudo, Mishra Raas, Talwar Raas, and Garbo, captivating the audience with their energy and authenticity.

An inspiring address by the President of the School Managing Committee, Mr. Abraham George, offered valuable guidance and encouragement.

As a token of gratitude, mementoes were presented to the distinguished crew members and the folk artists by the office bearers of the School Managing Committee. The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks.
