ONAM 2026: A VIBRANT CELEBRATION OF CULTURE, UNITY AND TOGETHERNESS

On 25 August 2026, Indian School Sohar celebrated the vibrant festival of Onam with great enthusiasm and festive spirit. Special assemblies were organized for students from Kindergarten to Class XII, providing the school community with an opportunity to celebrate and appreciate the rich cultural heritage and traditions of Kerala.

The celebrations commenced with a soulful prayer song, creating a serene and positive atmosphere. This was followed by the ceremonial Lighting of the Lamp by the Principal, Ms. Sanchita Verma, the Vice Principal, Mr. Yashvir Singh, and the Assistant Vice Principal, Ms. Indira Sukumaran. The grand entry of Maveli, the legendary king associated with Onam, added a traditional and festive touch to the occasion.

An engaging Onam presentation took the audience on a colourful journey through the traditions and celebrations associated with Onam and Kerala. The presentation was brought alive through simultaneous performances by the children, who portrayed various elements of the festival, including Pookkalam, Pulikali, Onasadya and traditional Onam attire. The creative blend of narration and live performances made the presentation informative, colourful and engaging. The cultural programme continued with a melodious Onam Song, filling the atmosphere with festive cheer.

The highlight of the celebration was the spectacular Fusion Dance. Bringing together diverse dance forms, movements and rhythms, the vibrant performance showcased the creativity, energy and talent of the students. This was followed by a graceful and energetic Vallamkali dance, which recreated the excitement and spirit of Kerala's traditional snake boat races.

Following the cultural performances, the Principal, Ms. Sanchita Verma, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of celebrating cultural festivals as a means of preserving traditions, appreciating diversity and strengthening the bonds of unity and togetherness. Her inspiring address highlighted the values of joy, gratitude, harmony and inclusiveness that lie at the heart of Onam.

The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by the Assistant Vice Principal, Ms. Indira Sukumaran, who expressed her sincere gratitude to the school leadership, teachers, students, performers and everyone who contributed to the successful conduct of the celebrations.

The special assembly concluded with the National Anthem, bringing the celebration to a dignified close. The Onam celebrations at Indian School Sohar were a resounding success, offering students a meaningful opportunity to experience, celebrate and showcase the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
