ANNUAL SPORTS DAY 2016-17

“One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team.” says Kareem Abdul Jabbar, the famous Basketball player.  Apart from commemorating victories, sports meets also aim at imparting lessons on sportsman spirit and camaraderie to children.  Indian School Sohar conducted its24th Annual Sports Day on 19th Jan., 2017 at the Sohar Sports Stadium with great opulence in a frolicsome atmosphere upholding this aspect of sporting events. Mr Abdullah bin Mahmoud Al Farsi, Director of Educational Programs, Department for Continuing Education and Special Education, Ministry of Education, Al Batina North Governorate graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Mr. Turki Abdullah Saeid Al-Salhi, Specialist Sports Activities, Dept. of Education, North Al Batinah Governate was the dignified Guest of Honour.

The day's proceedings began with a mellifluous song by the choir portraying the unity and oneness of mankind. After her endearing welcome note, Ms. Sanchita Verma, the Principal, presented the Annual Sports Report highlighting the outstanding achievements that glorified Indian School Sohar. Gaurav Pokra, Sambhav Agnihotri, Vennela Kothari altogether achieved 5 gold medals in the CBSE Oman Cluster Athletic Meet. Prisha Singh and Mohd. Owais Khan achieved Gold medals in CBSE Oman cluster swimming competition. She stressed on the theme of the Sports Day, Go Green and Keep Oman Clean.The synchronized, rhythmic and majestic March Past, led by the Council Members and House Captains preceded by the tiny tots of classes KG-II, dressed in vibrant and intriguing costumes highlighting the diverse culture of the world, gave an apposite beginning for the event. The March Past exhibited discipline and hardcore practice of the students. The Torch Relay was held aloft by the Winners of CBSE Oman Cluster Athletic Meet, 2016. The Chief Guest declared the meet OPEN soon after the solemn oath administered by the Sports Captain, Sanoj Sam upholding the dignity of the games and expressing the determination to keep the sportsman spirit alive.  The mascot of the 24th Annual Athletic Meet, 2017, Mickey Mouse enhanced the magnificence of the event with its universal appeal, being a symbol of goodwill, might and swiftness, the very essence of sports. The magnetic Mickey Mouse going round interacting with the thrilled audience was a sight to behold.

The track and field events began with the funny and innovative races like Honey bee Race, Butterfly Race, Clown Race etc. held for the students of KG to Std. V created an enthralling atmosphere.  The spectacular Mass PT- “Go Green” performed by students of Std. III to V, to the back drop of vibrant music like that of “Cup Of Life” by Ricky Martin enchanted one and all. The Formation Dance by the students from Classes IX and X to the tune of Malahari music and Zumba Dance by the students of Std. VI to VIII were characterized by perfect synchronization, fantastic formations and energetic movement. The 100m races and the Mixed Relays evoked such fervor that everyone stood tip toe to witness the winner. The Karate Display brimming with vigour and valour , by the students from Classes III-V,was breath taking. After the students’ events the parents also participated enthusiastically in the event scheduled for them. It was heartening to see them participating in large numbers with great enthusiasm!

The Sports Meet came to an end with the Prize Distribution. The winners of various inter-school sporting activities and of various races, Individual Champions and the winning Houses were awarded. The proudest moment of the ceremony was when the School Managing Committee acknowledged Sambhav Agnihotri, for securing twin silver medals in long jump and triple jump in the 21st CBSE National Athletic Meet, with a bouquet, gold coin, trophy and a crown of leaves signifying the authentic Olive Crown awarded at Olympics. The GreenHouse was adjudged the overall winner and the Blue House emerged Runner Up.  The trophy for March past was lifted by the Red House and Yellow House secured second position. Mohammed Rishan, Faiz Ahmmed, Roberto Ryan and Sambhav Agnihotri were the individual Boys Champions and R. Catherine, Vennela Kothari,Anshika Yadav, Greeshma C.S. and Surabhi Singh were the individual Girls Champions in various categories.  A lively commentary throughout the programme by a team of students kept the audience thoroughly entertained.

The presence of Mr. Abraham George, President, School Management Committee, Mr. Dilip Asher, Convener, SMC and other SMC members, Mr.Lalit Asher, Mr. Ajay Damani, and Dr. Mahesh Mistry was quite encouraging.  The day filled with promises for all the young sports enthusiasts ended with the vibrant hopes of the sporting students flying high as Sambhav proved that“the difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination.”
